WESTERN MAINTENANCE CONFERENCE

PHOENIX, ARIZONA ELECTRICAL BREAKOUT SESSION MINUTES

MAY 1, 2000

RICK HORCICAK

MORNING SESSION

About 30 electrical / electronic maintenance electricians attended this session. We started out by having everyone introduce themselves and what newspaper they worked for. We then started at one end of the table and worked are way around with each individual asking questions about problems or giving information out they felt might be useful to people in the room.

1) VSI PROXES ON COLORLINER PRESSES: Has anyone come up with a solution to new style vsi proxes that Goss is now shipping to replace old style. New style requires that the vsi motor and gearbox be separated in order to install new style prox. From a maintenance - production stand point this is unexceptable. Ron Deleski did some research and was able to come up with a replacement that will replace the Dynapar it is made by Xensor. We have been using it for about a year now with no failures or problems. Handed out paper work on Xensor prox wiring etc. Any one wanting this information can contact Phoenix Newspapers Deer Valley Electric Shop 602-444-7087 and speak to Ron Deleski 1ST shift lead, Rick Horcicak 2nd shift lead, Mike Hilbert 3rd shift lead.

2) SHEETS OUT ON POWER GLITCHES COLORLINER PRESSES: Goss has a bulletin out on this which has to do with hooking brake up to uninterrupted power supply.

3) REPLACEMENT OF DRIVE MOTOR BRUSHES COLORLINER PRESSES: Suggestion was made to rotate brush ring by first marking and then rotating ring to get to back brushes also to change slot head bolts to hex head that hold brush wires for easier removal and installation.

4) LOOSING SHEETS ON ½ ROLLS SOMETIMES ON ¾: Found problem to be rubber bumper in carriage arm. Informed them that are machine shop makes these out of cutting rubbers we do not purchase them from Goss.

5) DANCER POSITION IN PASTER CYCLE: A lot of discussion on this. All sites stated their dancers run level at all speeds and size rolls. Phoenix dancers run high unless Warner brake is adjusted for various speeds and size rolls. Questions asked about brake maintenance etc. most places just blow them out one-newspaper uses cleaning fluid and a cleaning tank. To date no one has changed out brake pads to the extent we have in Phoenix. After much discussion it was found out that all sites that dancer runs level in paster cycle run speck tension or less recommended by Goss.

6) SHEARING PINS ON THE VERTICAL SHAFT ON E-STOPS HEADLINER PRESSES: We had this problem in are Mesa facilities a number of years back. Solution was to replaces pins with clutches. Anyone wanting more information on this solution contact Jim Troyer at Phoenix Newspapers 602-444-7021.

7) SLIP RING AND FINGERS: Question was do others use Goss gauge to set fingers and what success do you have with them. Informed them LA TIMES has a retro fit that seems to work that eliminates the gauge and guess work.

8) RYCO SPRAY BARS, ASKED THOSE THAT HAD IF THEY ARE HAVING ANY PROBLEMS: No problems noted.

9) DRAGGING PRESS DRIVE MOTOR: Some places are some are not. Sites that are make sure they rotate motors being dragged

10) 50 INCH CUT DOWN: Most papers going this way or already have switched over.

11) MASTER WORK STATION TEMPLATE COMING OFF: Goss wants $10,000.00 ea or 3 for $18,000.00. Santa Barbara had there platemaking department make a template out of film we understand. They will send us information asap.

AFTERNOON SESSION WITH GOSS

The following are comments or suggestions made by Goss reps.

CHRIS McALPINE JOHN SCHECKEL DAN VOGEL

Rubber stops in carriage arms for brush should be changed a couple times a year on units that are run a lot.

Make sure you use the same manufacture on the air cylinders for both sides of the dancer roller, there are about three (3) different manufactures out there.

Most newspapers are 90% plus in rolls per break average.

When running bay windows leads make sure that the predrive is running on the straight sheet side not on the bay window side.

Blankets one of the hottest subjects most papers running neutral feed blankets.

If you have a triple trap roller configuration paster patterns may need to be made shorter on that unit.

Keep hydraulic pumps running all the time to avoid air in lines. Cliff Broad from Victoria Colonist has a retro for this His # is 250-380-5224

Watch varatio drives for gear slop this will cause problems with roll gap.

Paster brushes should just be just kissing expiring sheet when carriage is down in paster cycle.

If you have ¼ inch wear on paster brushes you should change them out.

Excessive tension on the sheet is not the only factor for blown pasters but is a very major one.

Center 15 clutch flag needs to be pined

You should be running air on all angle bars

If a unit is silenced the e-stop on that unit will not work as per design

If you are going to 50 inch and have static tension you will need to adjust tension. Running tension should not need adjustment

If you are using pena bar and getting alot of black tape shut downs roll may be slipping on the bar.

Once again the Western Maintenance Conference was a worthwhile experience. With a wealth of information being exchanged that can help us all be more productive. I would like to thank all who put together this years conference I know besides people who were there a lot of other people were in the back round who contributed to the conferences success. I know we hear this all the time but it always makes me feel good. ?

You people have the cleanest production facility we have ever seen?.

Thanks Rick Horcicak
