When one of our electricians, Chip Hutchinson, was doing a cooling fan PM recently, he
noticed that air was blowing out of the cabinet instead of into the
cabinet. The first thing that he thought was that someone wired the fan to
run in the wrong direction. When he opened the door to check the fan
direction, the fan stopped. He checked the fan and it was bad. He then
closed the door and the fan started turning again. He then realized that
positive air pressure in the cabinet was causing air to escape through fan
hole which in turn was causing the fan to turn. He then looked for vents
for the air to escape and found only 2. They are located at each end of
the press drive cabinet row but they had covers installed over them. He
opened the cabinets and where the cabinets meet, the covers are removed
and some wiring goes through but they are not open to the room.
So basically, we are sucking air into the cabinets but not venting it out. The fans are pressurizing the cabinets but not cooling them. We have since knocked out vent holes in the upper left hand corner of each door. You would not believe how much air is being vented and how much cooler the drives run. I will post pictures on the website. Regards, Lonnie M. Collins Electrical Systems Manager The Seattle Times Phone 425-489-7041 Fax 425-489-7187 lcollins@seattletimes.com
